Bloodline, AIDS and Family: Images by Kristen Ashburn

Kristen Ashburn is a documentary photographer based in New York City. She was named one of Photo District News’ Top Thirty Emerging Photographers in 2004, and her work has appeared in the New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, and Life Magazine. She has won numerous awards and grants including the Marty Forscher Fellowship for Humanistic Photography in 2003, Canon’s Female Photojournalist Award in 2004, the John Faber Award from the Overseas Press Club of America in 2007, a Getty Grant in 2006, a Pictures of the Year Award in 2007, National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism awards in 2003, 2006, and 2007, and World Press Photo Prizes in 2003 and 2005. In 2007, Kristen received an Emmy nomination for her multi-media presentation of this body of work.
She served as Consulting Producer for the film I Am Because We Are, written and produced by Madonna. Photographs from this series as well as images commissioned specifically for the film are featured in the new book I Am Because We Are: Photographs by Kristen Ashburn.
