Bloodline, AIDS and Family: Images by Kristen Ashburn
Composition Gallery, in cooperation with the Atlanta Photography Group (APG), presents "Bloodline, AIDS and Family: Images by Kristen Ashburn", a remarkable collection of photographs documenting the harsh reality of the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa, which has claimed over thirty million lives. The artist will be present at an opening reception for the exhibition on Saturday January 31st from 7 to 10 pm, and the exhibit will continue through Sunday March 15th.
Kristen Ashburn is a documentary photographer based in New York City. She was named one of Photo District News' Top Thirty Emerging Photographers in 2004, and her work has appeared in the New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, and Life Magazine. She has won numerous awards and grants including the Marty Forscher Fellowship for Humanistic Photography in 2003, Canon's Female Photojournalist Award in 2004, the John Faber Award from the Overseas Press Club of America in 2007, a Getty Grant in 2006, a Pictures of the Year Award in 2007, National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism awards in 2003, 2006, and 2007, and World Press Photo Prizes in 2003 and 2005. In 2007, Kristen received an Emmy nomination for her multi-media presentation of this body of work.
She served as Consulting Producer for the film I Am Because We Are, written and produced by Madonna. Photographs from this series as well as images commissioned specifically for the film are featured in the new book I Am Because We Are: Photographs by Kristen Ashburn.
Kristen began to explore the impact of AIDS and HIV in 2001. By spending months with families struggling with the disease, she was able to convey the sheer scope of the tragedy as well as to capture, beautifully and compassionately, individual moments of poignancy and grace. All of the artist's proceeds from this exhibition will go directly to these families who are struggling with AIDS and HIV.
Composition Gallery is extremely proud to host Kristen's compelling and important work, and I would like to thank her and APG Board Member Edwin Robinson for this unique opportunity. Ron Hughes/Composition Gallery
